In this article, we will explore the process of selecting the proper size chandelier for various spaces in your home, such as the foyer, hallway, living room, and dining room. By doing so, you can enhance the atmosphere and style of your home.
GENERAL RULES:
- Determining the chandelier`s diameter
The approximate chandelier`s diameter is just a sum of your room's length and width.
For example, your room is 14 feet X 10 feet, so the chandelier's diameter will be: 14 + 10 = 24 inches.
- Determining the chandelier`s height
The approximate chandelier`s height is a multiplication of the room height by 2.5
For example, the height of your room is 10 feet, so the height of the chandelier will be: 10 x 2.5 = 25 inches.
- Determining the height for hanging a chandelier
If you plan to hang the chandelier above an open floor, make sure that the bottom of the chandelier is positioned at least 7.5 feet above the floor.
If you plan to hang the chandelier above a dining table or kitchen island, ensure that the bottom of the chandelier is positioned at least 30-36 inches above the tabletop.

Dining Room
If you want to hang a chandelier above your dining table or kitchen island, you can choose its size based on the size of the table or island. A rule is to pick a chandelier length or diameter that falls ½ and ¾ s of the table or island's length.
For example, your table length is 40 inches, so the chandelier should be between 20(40 x ½) and 30(40 x ¾) inches in diameter or length.
Long Foyer
To determine the size of a chandelier for the foyer, you can use the hallway's width as a guide. Multiply the foyer's width in feet by 2.5; the result will be the chandelier's diameter in inches.
As an example, the width of the foyer is 6 feet, so the chandelier`s diameter should be approximately 15(6 x 2.5) inches.
